About Richard Prideaux

Richard Prideaux is one of the founding partners of Original Outdoors and the lead instructor for Original Outdoor Professional.

His family come from a mix of farmers, gamekeepers and landowners that taught him from an early age the importance of being able to read the landscape, identify useful plants and that being outdoors was probably better than being indoors.

This became a childhood of spending hours getting lost in woods and fields, lighting fires and exploring the coastline of South-West England.

An early career in working as a freelance Mountain Leader led to more work as an expedition leader, event and remote-area medic and delivering training for companies across the U.K.

In 2006 he became a member of the local volunteer mountain SAR team, eventually becoming Deputy Team Leader of the team after time as the Training Officer. The final year was spent as the regional Operations Officer, representing the mountain rescue teams of NWMRA at inter-agency incidents and large-scale training exercises. He was also involved in training at a national level, and with the development of the MREW National Training Day.

Within Original Outdoors he has developed a range of training courses, both for the general public and for private clients. Alongside this Original Outdoors developed a commercial foraging business with Rhug Organic Estate, supplying ethically-sourced wild food to restaurants around the world and working with chefs to develop new recipes and techniques.

In 2017, following the increase in demand for training in a wider range of subjects from our clients Richard helped develop the Environmental Survival Training (EST) Framework and the current range of courses.

Richard Prideaux lives with his family in North Wales.

    #Beaumaris looking rather fetching in the last light of the day. On a quick recce for a private #coastalforaging course later this week. Took the opportunity to grab some wild edibles for tea whilst I was here... #wales #northwales #anglesey #ynysmon #cymru #gogleddcymru #visitwales #waleswildfood #foraging #forager #foragewales #foraginguk #sustainable #walesneverfails #yearofthesea #coast #sunset

    I have been sent a @helikontex #manbag to review. So I am giving it a (reasonably) hard life as a survey companion whilst out hunting for wild plants out on the land belonging to @rhugestate #nikon #molle #gearreview #outdoorprofessional #ecology #wales #uk #foraging #ethnobotany #northeastwales #corwen #wildlife #lovemyjob #tacticalmanbag

Pineapple Weed or Mayweed (Matricaria discoidea) is starting to appear in the meadow. Often confused with young Yarrow fronds but distinctive in scent and taste (pineapple, who would have guessed?). Good in salads, better when steeped in gin. #foraging #wildflower #plantoftheday #meadow #nature #ecology #flower #edibles #ediblethings #ukoutdoors #greenthings #wales #cymru

    It's raining, I am standing in a wood waiting for a man to shout something into a radio so I can do a thing. This isn't even my job today. Still very happy about it. #forest #oak #oaktree #quercus #woodland #wales #northwales #cymru #gogleddcymru #outdoors #funwithsheep

    Huge foraging group for @originaloutdoor near #ruthin today. Dozens of edible species, a few a little further down that #spectrumoftoxicity and some edible fungi lurking in damp corners #foragingcourse #wildfood #foraging #forage #inlandforaging #ukforaging #wales #wildwales #wildfooduk #forest #fungi #ediblethings #outdooroffice #outdoorskills #outdoorlife #bestjobever

I've submitted my review of the @mountainequipment Firefly down sleeping bag (in 'Ombre Blue') to @ukclimbing . I have been using this 2 (maybe 3) season bag for a couple of months. Thoughts: - Lightweight for a 'normal' down bag (600g-ish with stuffsack) - Small packed size (small loaf of bread equivalent) - Great capacity for large shoulders etc, but not baggy either (elasticated bits) - Slanted baffles and anatomical footbox. No cold spots if used in the right orientation - Not many features due to weightsaving (no neck baffle, no interior pocket etc) - Traceable down through the Down Codex thingy Full review going online this week (I think). #ukclimbing #ukhillwalking #ukhiking #camping #sleepingbag #campingkit #campinggear #alpine #mountaineering #mountainkit #mountaingear #gearreview #uk #mountainequipment #down #traceabledown #downcodex #outdoors

#ClocaenogForest is doing that impression of the #PacificNorthWest again. Teaching mountain nav 1:1 in #Snowdonia for the next couple of days. Today was micro navigation on the lower levels south of the A5 in Ogwen, tonight is night nav on Crimpiau and tomorrow is a full mountain day. I think I deserve a pie. Today I was teaching on the #foraging and #wildplant ID module of the #forestleader programme for @originaloutdoor This is the whiteboard laid out by the students from a selection of wild plants foraged from the forest and surrounding fields They were then given a set of identification keys, guides and other learning sheets to have a crack at identifying them themselves. It looks pretty good to me (although the biscuits have disappeared from the bottom edge!) #ecology #nature #education #bushcraft #outdoorskills #outdoorlearning #wales #northeastwales #northwales #denbighshire #wildfood #wildflower #trainthetrainer
