About Richard Prideaux

Richard Prideaux is one of the founding partners of Original Outdoors and the lead instructor for Original Outdoor Professional.

His family come from a mix of farmers, gamekeepers and landowners that taught him from an early age the importance of being able to read the landscape, identify useful plants and that being outdoors was probably better than being indoors.

This became a childhood of spending hours getting lost in woods and fields, lighting fires and exploring the coastline of South-West England.

An early career in working as a freelance Mountain Leader led to more work as an expedition leader, event and remote-area medic and delivering training for companies across the U.K.

In 2006 he became a member of the local volunteer mountain SAR team, eventually becoming Deputy Team Leader of the team after time as the Training Officer. The final year was spent as the regional Operations Officer, representing the mountain rescue teams of NWMRA at inter-agency incidents and large-scale training exercises. He was also involved in training at a national level, and with the development of the MREW National Training Day.

Within Original Outdoors he has developed a range of training courses, both for the general public and for private clients. Alongside this Original Outdoors developed a commercial foraging business with Rhug Organic Estate, supplying ethically-sourced wild food to restaurants around the world and working with chefs to develop new recipes and techniques.

In 2017, following the increase in demand for training in a wider range of subjects from our clients Richard helped develop the Environmental Survival Training (EST) Framework and the current range of courses.

Richard Prideaux lives with his family in North Wales.

Very nearly Type 2 fun on Pen Yr Ole Wen with Jan Bailey yesterday. Snowshoes, spindrift and suspect snowpacks. There's a lot of snow up there in the mountains of #Snowdonia, but it's unconsolidated and far from being 'in nick'. Let's see what happens today and over the weekend.,.. #welshwinter #snowdonia #snowdoniaconditions #mountains #snowshoes #snowshoeing #mountaineering #snow #winter #climbing #carneddau #type2fun #outdoors #selfreliance #wildernessskills #cymru #eryri #lovesnowdonia

    Demonstrating one-match fires in wet conditions. Very wet. Can you fit a camp fire with a snorkel? #bushcraft #campcraft #wildernessskills #wildernesssurvival #survivalcourse #estframework #originaloutdoors

Without fail, and without exception - people I work with on courses ALWAYS look happier after spending a few days in the woods. It doesn't matter if they have been lying on the ground for several nights, cooking over smokey fires or working hard for every small comfort - the smiles are broader at the end. I'd love to think that it had something to do with my scintillating personality, but even I cannot be that self-involved. No, the improvement in mood, outlook and self-confidence comes from the act of doing challenging but achievable tasks in an outdoor environment. It has nothing to do with #getoutside or any crap about just "being outdoors and magically feeling better" - I can point you at any number of friends and contacts who have successfully managed to feel depressend or to live with anxiety whilst working in a job that keeps them outside every day. The action of just going outdoors does not immediately have an effect on mood and positivity... What does make a difference however is working through an achievable challenge. Build a fire. Make a shelter. Climb a hill. Swim in cold water. Function happily in extremes of temperature. It's not a release of endorphins from just not being in a building - it's from having agency. From being able to have a direct impact on your life by undertaking a difficult but achievable task. From having increasing confidence in your own ability to suffer hardship and to push your boundaries. Even if it's all self-imposed. In fact - it's BECAUSE it's self-imposed. If you can ring the bell and leave at any time BUT you choose to stay in the struggle then you appreciate your achievment that much more. Even if it's just doing a little more than you did yesterday. #outdoors #outdoorsman #outdoorswoman #achievment #motivation #stuffithoughtabout #pseudointellectual

Out with a small group for a few hours on Saturday morning running an 'Introduction to Tracking' session. Multiple 'subjects' followed through the country park via a series of partial prints. You do get some strange looks from dog walkers when you're kneeling next to a muddy puddle waving a headtorch at a smeared bootprint... #tracking #mantracking #sar #lawenforcement #searchoperations #wales #northwales #cymru #signandprint #estframework

I am settling into a rhythm with regard to writing - a morning of wordsmithery and then doing something vaguely practical and creative until sunset. Today it was splitting and then shaping some alder lengths for a future project. A combination of a very battered and sorry-looking #Elwell hatchet and a #Hultafors #agdor Carpenter axe dealt were the tools of choice, and did everything I needed them to. Somewhere on the #NorthWales coast @heartwoodtreen howls in pain. #makingstuff #makingit #makingthings #making #woodwork #greenwoodwork #outdoors #creativity #productivity #axe #axes #axecraft #bushcraft #wildernessskills #carpentry #wales

I blame @heartwoodtreen for this. Knocking together a storage box for spoon knives, just need to work out some leather liners and finishing off the rough edges. #woodwork #carving #woodcraft #sloyd #tools #make #onehourproject #bushcraft

Two by two, hands of blue... Here I am modelling my tactical handwear, perfectly blending in with the background of a remote valley somewhere in Y Berwynion. I'm also wearing an early-preview version of the #CountryInnovation Woodlark smock. And I rather like it - especially as it seems to succesfully bridge the chasm of waterproof/breathable without much compromise. Jan is also blending into the background with something lighter and possibly warmer. That's a map in the midriff pocket by the way. Christmas wasn't THAT devastating to my BMI...
