We have worked alongside the armed forces, police, security professionals and those who investigate crimes for several years, delivering targeted, structured training within an outdoor skills and safety context.
The acronym M.I.L.E.S. stands for:

  • Military
  • Investigation
  • Law Enforcement

Each M.I.L.E.S. course from Original Outdoors is delivered by instructors with experience relevant to the subject they are teaching.

The M.I.L.E.S. courses are only open to those working in the above fields, and basic proof of eligibility will be required if attending an open course. All information will be treated in complete confidence and will only be accessible by the Course Director.

(Level 1) M.I.L.E.S Tracking Awareness

A Level 1 EST Framework course covering the skills used to track, pursue and monitor subjects using the sign they leave on the ground and other environments.

This UK-centric course is only open to those working in the fields of military, investigation, law enforcement and security and not to the general public. If you have further queries please get in touch directly.

Subjects covered over 1 day include:

  • The limitations of tracking and appropriate use within various fields
  • The track and sign that can be easily missed
  • Tactics for finding and following tracks
  • Scene preservation for tracking operations
  • The use of 'zoning' and predicting where tracks will be found
  • The differences between pursuit and recovery phases
  • Equipment choice and use
  • Recording tracks and communicating information
  • Working with other agencies and organisations
This course is delivered over one day and entirely outdoors.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or at our site in North Wales.

There are no training pre-requisites for this course but a minimum level of basic fitness and health is required. You must also work in one of the following fields:

(Level 1) Outdoor Operational Certificate

A Level 1 EST Framework course focusing on the skills needed to work safely in potentially hazardous outdoor environments whilst performing complex tasks related to certain roles.

This UK-centric course is only open to those working in the fields of military, investigation, law enforcement and security and not to the general public. If you have further queries please get in touch directly.

Subjects covered over 2 days include:

  • Equipment choice and pre-trip preparations
  • Working solo, in small teams and alongside other teams
  • Moving over rough ground
  • Prevention and treatment of hypothermia, and other environmental hazards
  • Basic navigation (note - this is not a navigation course, please see Navigation training stream)
  • Route planning and logistics
  • Signalling for help and preparing for rescue
  • Emergency techniques and decision making
  • Moving from one tactical phase to another
This course is delivered over two days and entirely outdoors in a variety of environments.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or with us in North Wales on a private estate.

There are no training pre-requisites for this course but a minimum level of basic fitness and health is required. You must also work in one of the following fields:

(Level 1) Basic Operational Fieldcraft

A Level 1 EST Framework course with structured training on the basics of camouflage and concealment, movement and observation of subjects.

  • The basic skills of camouflage and concealment
  • Equipment choice and improvisation in the field

  • Safety and legal considerations
This course is delivered over two days on a private estate with experienced instructors.

(Level 2) M.I.L.E.S. Tracking Operator

A Level 2 EST Framework course delivering training in obtaining, recording and following tracks and sign on the ground and other environments.

Subjects covered over 3 days include:

  • Immediate responses to situations where tracking can be employed
  • Acting as tactical advisor for tracking and search operations
  • Tactics for SAR, Pursuit, Forensic and Observation tracking operations
  • Scene preservation for tracking operations
  • Tracking in low-light and poor visibility
  • Onward planning for tracking and search operations
  • Ageing tracks and sign
  • Recording tracks and communicating information
  • Working with other agencies and organisations
This course is delivered over three days in a combination of indoor (classroom) and outdoor sessions.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or at one of our sites in North Wales.

Course Participants will need to show some previous experience/awareness of search operations or tracking - we strongly recommend that you have attended our L1 M.I.L.E.S Tracking Awareness course or equivalent.

A minimum level of basic fitness and health is required.

You must also work in one of the following fields:

  • Equipment and PPE choice
  • Campcraft and creating camps
  • Comms procedures and considerations
  • Working solo, in small teams and alongside other teams
  • Moving over rough ground (both roped and unroped)
  • Prevention and treatment of hypothermia, and other environmental hazards
  • Macro and Micro navigation in all conditions
  • Route planning and logistics - including resupply and caching
  • Signalling for help and preparing for rescue
  • Emergency techniques and decision making
  • Moving from one tactical phase to another
This course is delivered over three days in a combination of indoor (classroom) and outdoor sessions.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or at one of our sites in North Wales.

Course Participants will need to show some previous experience/awareness of outdoor operations - we strongly recommend that you have attended our L1 Outdoor Operational Certificate course or equivalent, or have appropriate experience.

A good level of general fitness and health is required. You will be moving over rough terrain and sleeping outdoors.

You must also work in one of the following fields:

A Level 2 EST Framework course delivering training in working in a sub-alpine mountainous environment for extended periods whilst performing role-related tasks.

  • Equipment and PPE choice
  • Movement over steep ground (unroped)
  • Comms procedures and considerations
  • Working solo, in small teams and alongside other teams
  • Moving over rough ground (including basic scrambling)
  • Prevention and treatment of hypothermia, and other environmental hazards
  • Macro and Micro navigation in all conditions
  • River crossings
  • Dealing with medical and trauma incidents in remote areas (please note - this is not a first aid course but we can arrange for separate training)
  • Signalling for help and preparing for rescue
  • Emergency techniques and decision making
  • Moving from one tactical phase to another
This course is delivered over three days in a combination of indoor (classroom) and outdoor sessions.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or at one of our sites in North Wales.

(Level 3) M.I.L.E.S Tracking Leader

A Level 3 EST Framework course for the leadership of M.I.L.E.S.Tracking Operations in all conditions.

This is an assessed course.

This UK-centric course is only open to those working in the fields of military, investigation, law enforcement and security and not to the general public. If you have further queries please get in touch directly.

Subjects covered over 3 days include:

  • Actions upon request for tracking/sign interpretation
  • Applying search theory to inform the planning process.
  • Strategies to integrate with a multi-agency search process or stand-alone as required.
  • Determining coverage from use of GPS/GIS and team debrief process.
  • Considerations for suspension of a tracking/search operations in the event of the subject not being found/located.
  • Working within a wider M.I.L.E.S. operation and alongside other agencies
  • Leadership and supervision of tracking operations
  • Hierarchical command structures and working within a Strategic/Tactical/Operational command system
  • Acting as tactical advisor for tracking and search operations
  • Deployment of resources and prioritisation of operations
  • Crime scene, scene preservation and major incident procedures
  • Control comms procedures
  • Briefing, debriefing and information handling

This course is delivered over three days in a combination of indoor (classroom) and outdoor sessions.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or at one of our sites in North Wales.

Those attending this course will need to have received some significant subject-relevant training previously, such as the L2 M.I.L.E.S. Tracking Operator course and the Level 1 Basic Land Navigation course or equivalent.

Ideally they will also have completed the Level 1 GPS Use course or equivalent and have appropriate first aid/medical training.

A minimum level of basic fitness and health is required.

You must also work in one of the following fields:
