We work with clients of all types to develop realistic and relevant survival training courses based on case studies, and the extensive experience of our team of instructors.

We deliver courses both as part of the EST Framework and as tailored training packages to meet the individual needs of our clients.

Level 1 EST Campcraft Courses

(Level 1) Campcraft Course

A Level 1 EST Framework course focusing on the basics of building short-term expedition and basecamps away from civilisation.

Subjects covered over 2 days include:

  • Choosing and using various shelter types
  • Sleep systems and choosing the right equipment for the environment
  • Building and organising a short-term camp
  • Personal admin and organisation
  • Digging and using latrines, sanitation management and camp health
  • Fire management and preparation
  • Cooking over open fires and portable stoves
  • Using cutting tools
  • Simple knots and ropework for various uses
  • Emergency strategies
This course is delivered over two days and entirely outdoors.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or at our site in North Wales.

There are no training pre-requisites for this course but a minimum level of basic fitness and health is required.
This course can be tailored to meet a client specification, or combined with other courses as a bespoke training package.

(Level 1) Woodcrafter Course

A Level 1 EST Framework course that is a similar syllabus to our L1 Campcraft course but with more emphasis on bushcraft and traditional wilderness forest skills.

Subjects covered over 2 days include:

  • Choosing and using various shelter types
  • Building shelters from natural materials
  • Organising a overnight forest camp
  • Finding safe drinking water
  • Personal admin and organisation
  • Digging and using latrines, sanitation management and camp health
  • Firecraft using a variety of methods
  • Cooking over open fires and portable stoves
  • Using cutting tools and sharpening
  • Simple knots and ropework for various uses
  • Wild food and useful plants/trees/fungi
This course is delivered over two days and entirely outdoors.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or at our site in North Wales.

There are no training pre-requisites for this course but a minimum level of basic fitness and health is required.
This course can be tailored to meet a client specification, or combined with other courses as a bespoke training package.

(Level 1) Mountain Wild Camping Course

A Level 1 EST Framework course delivering training in short-term camps in a mountain environment.

Subjects covered over 2 days include:

  • Shelter choice and options
  • Finding a campsite and camp priorities
  • Water filtration and purification
  • Route choice and contingencies
  • Prevention and treatment of hypothermia and other environmental hazards
  • Weather and dealing with adverse conditions
  • Equipment choice and use
  • Signalling for help and preparing for rescue
  • Emergency techniques
This course is delivered over two days and entirely outdoors.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or with us in North Wales.

Level 2 EST Campcraft Courses

(Level 2) Advanced Campcraft Course

A Level 2 EST Framework course that is a direct continuation of the L1 Campcraft, Woodcrafter or Mountain Wild Camping courses.

It deals with the skills required for planning, building and living in a remote camp for medium-term trips and expeditions.

Subjects covered over 3 days include:

  • Choosing and using various shelter types for solo and group use
  • Sleep systems for extreme temperatures
  • Building and organising a medium-term camp
  • Construction of camp furniture and tools (chairs, showers, beds etc)
  • Planning for food and other consumables
  • Personal admin and organisation
  • Digging and using latrines over extended periods, sanitation management and camp health
  • Fire management and preparation
  • Cooking over open fires and portable stoves
  • Using cutting tools
  • Emergency strategies and communications
This course is delivered over three days and entirely outdoors.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or at our site in North Wales.

We strongly recommend that those attending this course have previously attended a Level One course from the Campcraft training stream, such as the L1 Campcraft, Woodcrafter or Mountain Wild Camping courses. A minimum level of basic fitness and health is required.

(Level 2) Woodmaster Course

A Level 2 EST Framework course that delivers comprehensive training on the traditional bushcraft and wilderness skills of living in remote forested areas for extended periods.

Subjects covered over 4 days include:

  • Firelighting from basics to advanced techniques
  • Building short term and long term shelters from natural materials
  • Living in tents and bivvy bags and under tarps in all conditions
  • Use of hammocks and 'sleep systems'
  • Equipment choice and care
  • Rucksacks and carry systems
  • Expedition skills and planning
  • Cooking over an open fire
  • Hot Smoking and preservation techniques
  • Finding safe drinking water and managing resources
  • Choosing and using a bushcraft knife, axe and saws safely (including sharpening)
  • Use of cutting tools
  • Forest campcraft and camp organisation
  • Camp hygiene and sanitation
  • Identification of useful plants
  • Building traps, snares and hunting options
  • Making tools, camp furniture and other items from natural materials
  • Practical carving
  • Basic tracking
  • Making cordage from natural materials
  • Knots and useful cordage techniques
  • Emergency procedures
  • How to plan a short overnight trip
This course is delivered over four days and entirely outdoors.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or at our site in North Wales.

Some basic bushcraft or wilderness skills training is strongly recommended for those attending this course, such as the L1 Woodcrafter or Campcraft course. A good level of personal fitness and health is required.

A Level 3 EST Framework course for those responsible for managing expedition camps and basecamps in remote areas.

This course includes an assessment.

Subjects covered over 4 days include:

  • Planning and siting basecamps
  • Pre-trip planning and logistics for camps
  • Camp sanitation strategies
  • Food and cooking in different environments
  • Made vs bought for camp infrastructure
  • Choosing and erecting portable shelters of all types
  • Strategies for extreme temperatures and altitudes
  • Medical provision
  • Emergency planning, NOPs and EAPs
This course is delivered over four days and entirely outdoors.
It can be delivered on site with the client (assuming a suitable location can be provided) or at our site in North Wales.

Those attending this course will need to have had significant subject-relevant training. Ideally they will have completed either the L2 Advanced Campcraft or Woodmaster courses and have a minimum level of basic fitness and health.
This course can be tailored to meet a client specification, or combined with other courses as a bespoke training package.

  • Cooking over an open fire (including baking and constructing ovens)

  • Making tools, camp furniture and other items from natural materials
  • Practical carving and sloyd
  • Making cordage from natural materials
  • Knots and useful cordage techniques
  • Emergency procedures
  • River crossings and rough-ground movement

  • Made vs bought for camp infrastructure
  • Emergency planning, NOPs and EAPs

We created the Environmental Survival Training Framework in collaboration with experienced outdoor skills practitioners, education professionals and established clients and training partners.
